Newcastle have announced that both Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey have signed new contracts to extend their stay in the north-east until 2023.
The pair have enjoyed mixed fortunes this season as injury has prevented each of them from getting the game time they would have wished for, making nine and 16 appearances in the league respectively.
Despite that, it seems Steve Bruce is a fan of the pair as they often do feature when they are available, and having helped Newcastle re-establish itself as a Premier League club following promotion in 2017 the new deals are an appropriate award.
Some fans are a little sceptical by this decision, however, with arguments being made that keeping the duo indicates a lack of progress at the club and a continuation of the previous few years.
Other fans have been more detailed when sharing their views, with a variety of thoughts being espoused about Jonjo Shelvey for example.

The same can be said of Ritchie, too, who has drawn a little criticism despite being part of the team that won promotion under Rafa Benitez and has so far performed quite well under Bruce with 1.8 key passes per game from six league starts.
